>>> L'intérêt de ce documentaire reste plutôt maigre, surtout de par l'évocation trop scolaire et parfois lourde de l'extraordinaire carrière d'Alice Guy. En effet, autant les différentes interventions de quelques spécialistes du milieu cinéma sont parfaitement utiles et bien agencées, autant les extraits du téléfilm de Caroline Huppert : "Elle voulait faire du cinéma" comme le rajout "artificiel" de quelques rires de spectateurs ponctuant la vision de certains films d'Alice Guy ou les déambulations d'une insipide étudiante à la recherche de renseignements sur la réalisatrice sont absolument surnuméraires, voire saugrenus. Par contre l'ensemble prend une dimension incontournable et remarquable lorsqu'on rentre dans le vif du sujet, c'est à dire les mises en scènes de la fameuse réalisatrice, certes pléthoriques et souvent invisibles, mais dont on peut ici apprécier huit d'entre eux, merveilleux additifs, complémentaires au documentaire .....

Barbra Streisand hosts and executive produces a brand-new TV documentary special called Reel Models: The First Women of Film, which premiered on American Movie Classics (AMC) on Tuesday, May 30, 2000 (8:00-9:00 p.m.). Co-executive produced with Cis Corman and directed by Emmy Award winners Susan and Christopher Koch (City of Hope), the program profiles the cinema's earliest female pioneers - Oscar-winning directors Dorothy Arzner (in whose name Women In Film presented Streisand with a special award in 1992), Lois Weber (actually the very first woman to direct, produce, write, and act in a theatrical feature back in the early silent era), and Alice Guy (a French film pioneer who invented the director's job), and screenwriter Frances Marion (a two-time Oscar winner who penned Garbo's first spoken words). Academy Award-winning actresses Shirley MacLaine, Susan Sarandon, and Hillary Swank, and Minnie Driver provide on-screen narration for each of the documentary's four segments. Barbra handles the opening and closing segments. AMC repeats the program on June 25 at 2:00 p.m.

Titles include The Sewer (1911), Algie the Miner (1912), The Hypocrites (1912), Polyanna (1920), and three others. Reel Models repeated on May 31 at 2:00 a.m. In conjunction with the documentary, AMC presented film festivals in L.A. on May 15 and in New York on May 22 that showcased films made by Arzner, Guy, Marion, and Weber.
Hosted by AMC and New York Women in Film & Television, the New York film festival took place at the Clearview Chelsea Theater, 260 W. 23rd Street, on May 22 at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. A screening of Reel Models: The First Women of Film occured at the same theater at 7:30 p.m., with a panel discussion following at 8:30 p.m. The panel was hosted by Cis Corman, President, Barwood Films. Panelists include: MoMA Curator Mary Lea Bandy; moderator; Director Martha Coolidge; author Olivia Goldsmith; film historian Anthony Slide; Former Academy President Fay Kanin; film critic Molly Haskell; and Reel Models director Susan Koch. Both events benefit the Women's Film Preservation Board.

Alice Guy was one of the world's first film makers. She was a pioneer of the story film. She also helped to define the role of the director, and to become an early studio head. The fascinating documentary, First Women of Film (2000), looks at her work and that of Lois Weber.

Alice Guy est une pionnière du cinéma. Elle fut notamment la collaboratrice de Louis Gaumont à la fin du 19 ème siècle.Elle réalisa un grand nombre de films en France puis en Amérique. Tombée dans l'oubli jusqu'en 1955, elle fut redécouverte notamment par Victor Bachy, professeur belge de cinéma.

Gloire a Melies, gloire a Zecca ! Oublions Alice Guy, s'il vous plait. Il vaut mieux continuer à penser que : LES FEMMES NE SONT PAS CRÉATRICES, ET QU'IL N'Y A PAS DE GENIE FEMME.
Donc, Alice Guy n'est pas une femme, d'ailleurs elle est morte et on parle si peu d'elle dans les histoires du cinema, que c'est comme si elle n'avait jamais tournè un mètre de film......
Et en plus, cette femme était jolie!
Comment comprendre, alors? Son oeuvre ne valait-elle rien ? Ses six cents films, tous inintéressants ? Qui le sait, qui le saura, les films ont disparu pour la plupart ou sont cachés pour le profit de quelques collectionneurs. Ses contemporains eux, l'aimaient bien. Ses films plaisaient: On n'oserait plus maintenant appeler un film "Un Hanneton dans le Pantalon" Elle, elle osait. Elle le faisait

Gwendolyn Audrey Foster holds the rank of Professor in the Department of English, University of Nebraska, Lincoln, specializing in Film Studies, Cultural Studies, and Postfeminist Critical Theory. Since 1999, Foster has been the Editor-in-Chief of Quarterly Review of Film and Video. QRFV is an interdisciplinary and internationally recognized academic journal of visual studies, film studies and cultural studies.

Her documentary WOMEN WHO MADE THE MOVIES is in the permanent collections of Barnard College, George Mason University, The University of Washington, and New York University.

Dr. Foster's awards and fellowships include a Research Fellowship, UNL Research Council, for the project "The Films of Alice Guy Blach�," involving travel to film archives in New Zealand and Amsterdam to view rare film prints of the films of Alice Guy Blach�, 1999; and the prestigious National Emerging Scholar Award, American Association of University Women, 1998, for teaching, research, and the mentoring of women students.

In the Winter of 1997, Dr. Foster delivered a lecture at The Museum of Modern Art in New York on the films of Barbara Hammer, in conjunction with a screening of Hammer's work, and presented a paper on the work of filmmaker Safi Faye at the 1997 MLA National Convention in Washington, DC. Most recently, she has conducted an interview with Trinh T. Minh-ha which recently appeared in the journal Film Criticism.

Recipient of a Rockefeller Foundation Grant for Performance Art, Gwendolyn Foster also served as a judge for final selections of The Southwest Alternate Media Project Independent Production Fellowship Funds of the National Endowment for the Arts, July 29-31, 1993, in Houston, TX, and was a Juror for 16th Annual Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Student Film Awards.
